Debt collectors

Velocity Investments

Velocity Investments buys unpaid accounts, such as personal loans, and passes them to a network of agencies and law firms, so its name often turns up on another company's letter or court papers.

Who is Velocity Investments?

Velocity Investments is a debt buyer. Its FAQ says it purchases accounts (Velocity Investments company site, opens in a new tab) and coordinates a network of collection providers to contact consumers.

The company says it was established in 2003 (Velocity Investments company site, opens in a new tab) in Wall, New Jersey. Florida's registry lists it as a New Jersey limited liability company (Florida Division of Corporations (Sunbiz), opens in a new tab), registered in Florida since 2006.

In one 2026 Ohio case, a bank sold a personal loan to Velocity (Ohio First District Court of Appeals, opens in a new tab) about two months after the borrower's last payment.

Is Velocity Investments legit, or is this a scam?

Velocity Investments is a real company. Its FAQ calls it a legitimate company (Velocity Investments company site, opens in a new tab) and, by the CFPB's definition, a debt collector. It also publishes state license disclosures, including a California license.

We found no CFPB enforcement action (CFPB, opens in a new tab) against Velocity Investments, no FTC case, and no state action in our search. A clean record says nothing about whether your particular balance is right; only the validation papers can show that.

Velocity keeps an official phone number page (Velocity Investments company site, opens in a new tab) so people can check that a call is really from it.

Why is Velocity Investments contacting you?

Most often, Velocity bought an account in your name. Its FAQ says Velocity may show up on a statement or letter as the current owner (Velocity Investments company site, opens in a new tab) of a debt in your name.

The first contact may come from a firm in its nationwide network (Velocity Investments company site, opens in a new tab) of collection agencies and law firms. If you think the account came from identity theft, Velocity asks you to raise it with the agency or law firm servicing it (Velocity Investments company site, opens in a new tab).

Compare the creditor and balance in the validation notice (CFPB, opens in a new tab) with your own statements.

What are your rights when Velocity Investments contacts you?

Velocity's FAQ accepts that it is a debt collector, so the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and Regulation F cover Velocity and the firms that work its accounts. California adds a debt buyer law of its own, the one at the center of the 2026 Nguyen appeal.

Should you pay Velocity Investments?

Only after the checks. A Velocity account has changed hands at least once, and the California appeal shows the paperwork does not always follow the account. Confirm the debt is yours, the balance is right and your state's time limit has not run. Leaving the letter unanswered will not make the account go away.

  1. First

    Write for validation

Send the dispute to the agency or law firm on the letter, inside the 30 days.

  2. Then

    Date the debt

Find your last payment date. State limits usually run three to six years (CFPB, opens in a new tab), and paying part of an old debt can restart some of them.

  3. Then

    Choose

Valid and in time: pay, settle or agree on a plan you can afford. Old, wrong or unfamiliar: speak to a lawyer before any money moves.

    Your decision

Velocity's California notice says that on a debt past the legal time limit, it will not sue you (Velocity Investments company site, opens in a new tab) and will not report it to a credit bureau.

What if Velocity Investments sues you?

Velocity's network includes law firms, so court papers usually come from a firm you have never heard of. Two 2026 appeals show why the paperwork, and your answer, matter.

In California, an appeals court reversed a judgment for Velocity (California Court of Appeal, Third District, opens in a new tab). The agreement attached to its first complaint was a standard form with no clear link to the borrower, and California's debt buyer law requires that proof.

In Ohio, an appeals court upheld a judgment for Velocity (Ohio First District Court of Appeals, opens in a new tab) on a personal loan it had bought. Some of the borrower's arguments were raised only on appeal, and the court treated them as waived.

  1. Note the answer date on the summons and file your response by then, with or without a lawyer (CFPB (CFPB, opens in a new tab)).
  2. Look at the papers attached to the complaint: do they actually tie you to this account?
  3. Raise every defense in the trial court, since the Ohio borrower lost arguments first made on appeal; legal aid or a lawyer referral service can help (CFPB (CFPB, opens in a new tab)).

Negotiating with Velocity's law firm does not move the answer date. The date changes only if the judge changes it or a signed agreement is filed in the case.

Can you settle a Velocity Investments account for less?

Often, yes, though nothing is certain. Velocity says you can pay through the agency or law firm (Velocity Investments company site, opens in a new tab) handling the account or through its own portal, so you can ask either about settling for less.

In an FTC study, debt buyers paid about 4 cents per dollar (FTC, opens in a new tab) of face value on average. That is an industry average, not a promise about your account.

  1. Settle only after validation and a check of the debt's age.
  2. Get a letter from the servicer saying the payment closes the account in full.
  3. A forgiven balance of $600 or more may bring a Form 1099-C (IRS, opens in a new tab).

Will Velocity Investments agree to pay for delete?

"Pay for delete" means asking a collector to remove its credit report entry in return for payment. The CFPB says you generally cannot have accurate negative information removed (CFPB, opens in a new tab), and most of it stays for seven years.

We found no published credit reporting or deletion policy on Velocity's website. Ask the agency or law firm what it will report after you settle, and get the answer in the settlement letter.

What would Clear Financial do with a Velocity Investments account?

We can include a Velocity Investments account in a settlement program when your unsecured debts total $10,000 or more. First we would ask the servicing agency or law firm to validate it, then negotiate it alongside your other accounts. Nothing is paid to Velocity until you approve the terms1.

Already served with a Velocity lawsuit? Take the papers to an attorney. We do not give legal advice, and enrolling the account does not, by itself, end the case.

Things you should know

The downsides, stated plainly.

Read these before you enroll anywhere, including with us. They apply to every debt settlement program.

  • Your credit score will drop during the program, and late payments stay on your credit report.
  • Creditors may keep collecting while you save, and they can sue. The program does not stop legal action.
  • Interest and late fees can keep adding to your balances until each account settles.
  • Forgiven debt may be taxable income. A creditor may send you IRS Form 1099-C.
  • Fees apply. The fee is 20 to 29% of your enrolled debt, depending on your situation and how you enroll, charged only after a settlement is agreed and the first payment to the creditor is made.
  • Not all creditors agree to settle, and not everyone completes the program.
  • We do not guarantee any amount, percentage or timeline.
  • Debt settlement is not available in all states. We are not a nonprofit or a credit counseling service, and we do not lend money.
  • We do not give legal or tax advice. Talk to an attorney or a tax professional about your situation.

Notes on the figures and claims above

  1. 1Whether an account settles, and for how much, depends on the collector and the account. Not all debts settle. A settled account is reported as settled for less than the full balance, and forgiven debt may be taxable. Fees apply to accounts settled through our program.

Straight answers

Velocity Investments, straight answers.

Rather hear it from a person? 866-659-7966

Is Velocity Investments a scam?

No. It is a real, licensed debt buyer in Wall, New Jersey, and it publishes an official phone number page so you can check that a caller is really Velocity.

Why is Velocity Investments on my credit report?

Most often it bought an account in your name. If you do not recognize the account or suspect identity theft, dispute it through the servicing agency or law firm and with the credit bureau.

Can Velocity Investments sue me?

Yes, through the law firms in its network, on a valid debt still inside your state's time limit. Its California notice says it will not sue on debts past that limit. If you are served, answer by the deadline and get legal help.

Will Velocity Investments settle for less than I owe?

It may, and its FAQ lets you pay through the servicer or its own portal. Nothing is guaranteed, so get the amount and the paid-in-full wording in writing first.

Does paying Velocity remove it from my credit report?

Not necessarily. We found no published deletion policy, and accurate negative information usually stays for seven years. If a deletion matters to you, make it a written term of the deal.
